Ismail Arif Abdul Khafur Haji Ali was born in 1924 in Sulaymaniyah, a descendant of the poet Baba Tahir Hamedani. He began his religious studies in Sulaymaniyah in 1930 and completed the intermediate stage and mathematics course in 1941.
