Biography

Rashid Ismail Axa was born in 1920 in Diyala. He began his studies in the Law Department of the Baghdad College of Law in 1940 and received his bachelor's degree in 1944. He worked as a lawyer and judge and became a member of the Iraqi Lawyers' Union. He was appointed to the Ministry of Agricultural Reform in 1958 and was later appointed as a judge on February 14, 1960. He retired on June 30, 1983 and finally became a member of the History and Culture Committee of the Iraqi Kurdish Scientific Council (Iraqi Academy of Sciences).

 

He passed away on February 16, 2001 in Baghdad and was buried there in the Karkh cemetery. He was fluent in Kurdish, Turkish, Arabic, Persian and English.

In 1946, he was a delegate to the Second Congress of the Kurdish Liberation Party in Baghdad and voted to dissolve it so that the Kurdish Liberation Party could join the ranks of the Kurdish Democratic Party. In the same year, he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Kurdish Democratic Party at the first congress of the KDP. He participated in the fourth congresses in 1959 and the fifth in 1960. In 1963, he was arrested and tortured by the National Guard forces (Al Heres Al Qawmi) on charges of being Kurdish.
