Nechirvan Idris Mustafa Barzani was born in 1966 in the city of Erbil. He is from the Barzan family of sheikhs who are followers of Mevlana Khalid Naqshbandi. He is the grandson of General Mustafa Barzani (1903-1979), the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, and the son of Idris Barzani (1944-1987).
