Academic and politician Masrour Masoud Mustafa Barzani, known as Masrour Barzani, joined the ranks of the Kurdistan Peshmerga in 1985, was elected as a member of the Central Committee and Leadership Council and later as a member of the Political School of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in the 12th Congress in 1999 and in the 13th Congress in 2010, and was elected as the Vice President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in the 14th Congress in 2022. In 2004, he became the Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government's Defense Agency and in 2012, he was appointed as an advisor to the Kurdistan Regional Security Council. In 2019, he became the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government and was tasked with forming the ninth cabinet.
Biography
Masrour Barzani was born on March 2, 1969, in the village of Dilman in the Balekayeti region. He is from the family of Sheikhs Takya Barzani. He completed his secondary education in the Islamic Republic of Iran. In 1993, he went to the United States to continue his studies and in 1997, he received a bachelor's degree in international relations from the University of Washington in the United States. He then continued his studies at the same university and received a master's degree in peace and conflict resolution. He is married and has three sons and one daughter named Yasmin, Arin, Berzin and Aran. He speaks Kurdish, Persian, English and Arabic.

Masrour Barzani joined the Kurdistan Peshmerga Forces in the summer of 1985 and participated as a Peshmerga in the ranks of the progressive May Revolution. In 1988, he participated in the Xewkurkê Saga and recorded most of the battles with his camera. In 1991, he participated in the Kurdistan uprising as a Peshmerga and in the same year, he participated in the ninth session of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Cadres Convention.
He participated as a delegate in the 10th Congress in 1989, the 12th Congress in 1999, and the 13th Congress in 2010. He was elected as a member of the Central Committee and the Leadership Council in the 12th and 13th Congresses, and later as a member of the Political School of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). At the 14th Congress in 2022, he was unanimously elected as the Deputy Chairman of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) by the delegates of the Congress.
Duties and responsibilities
In 1998, he returned to Kurdistan from the United States to serve and became head of the Kurdistan Regional Government's Defense Agency on November 20, 2004.
In 2004, he was one of the advisors to President Masoud Barzani for writing the constitution of the Federal Republic of Iraq, and in 2005, he was appointed by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) as the person responsible for the unification of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Sulaymaniyah Administration. On April 30, 2012, he was appointed as an advisor to the Kurdistan Regional Security Council by Decision No. 68 of the Kurdistan Regional Presidency, and in 2017, he actively participated in the Kurdistan independence referendum process.
On December 3, 2018, at a meeting of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Leadership Council, he was nominated as the party's candidate for the post of Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, and on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, he was elected Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region by members of the Kurdistan Regional Parliament with 87 votes out of 97 votes.
On June 12, 2019, by regional decree No. 1, Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, was authorized to form the ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government, and on Wednesday, July 10, 2019, he received the confidence of the presidency of the fifth term of the Kurdistan Council of Ministers for the ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government in the Kurdistan Parliament.
The war against ISIS terrorists
After August 2014, in response to the attacks by ISIS terrorists on the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, Advisor to the Security Council of the Kurdistan Region, established a joint operations room with the International Coalition and played an effective role in directing airstrikes and conducting field operations against the terrorists. He was present on the battlefields alongside President Massoud Barzani and participated in overseeing most of the operations against ISIS.
On December 20, 2014, he participated in the operation to liberate the Rebia plain and Mount Sinjar, and on November 13, 2015, he participated in the operation to liberate the city of Sinjar from ISIS gangs.
Charitable and academic activities
He actively participated in the establishment of the Mustafa Barzani Center for Kurdish Peace at the American University in Washington, and on June 24, 1999, he read the speech of President Masoud Barzani at the opening of the center. On April 17, 2000, he participated in the World Congress of Kurdish and Identity Search at the Mustafa Barzani Center.
In 2005, he founded the Barzani Charitable Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to providing assistance to refugees and local people in need. In December 2013, he laid the cornerstone of the American University of Duhok and is currently the honorary president of that university's board.
In 2014, the Encyclopedia Committee of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) was established to introduce, collect, document, and publish the sovereign history of the work and struggle of the KDP.
