Martyr Mamend Sultan Mahmud was born in 1941 in the village of Balekiyan in the town of Diyana in the province of Erbil. He grew up in a village and was engaged in animal husbandry. He was illiterate and lived a married life.
In 1963, he joined the September Revolution and became a Peshmerga with Commander Arif Yasin. He also participated in the battles of Zozik, Gorez, and Hinduran. In 1966, he was killed by the Iraqi regime in the battle of Hinduran Mountain.
