Some of the Companions of Barzani participated in the first Barzan revolution (1931-1932) and some in the second Barzan revolution (1943-1945), and the vast majority of them carried weapons of defense in the Democratic Republic of Kurdistan in Mahabad in (1946); there were even fighters among them who had participated since the first Barzan revolution until the 1991 uprising.

The Companions of Barzani, without knowing where their fate would lead, had dedicated their lives for the sake of the freedom of the nation and the protection of the values, traditions, and culture of Kurdistan. The Companions of Barzani were followers of the Barzan path and General Mustafa Barzani; their decision to cross the borders of all those countries is proof of the historical fact that they were prepared for every sacrifice in this regard. If it were not so, they would not have endured all those natural difficulties and obstacles and the pursuit of the occupiers, which they faced throughout their journey and stay in the Soviet Union.

The Companions of Barzani were composed of fighters from different places, regions, and parts of Kurdistan, meaning that the differences and even those artificial borders that had separated Kurdistan could not become a barrier to their unity and single choice. The Companions of Barzani were among the very first to prove by action that the Barzani path is the school of Kurdishness and belief, and whoever follows this path becomes a Kurd.

The decision not to surrender and to continue the struggle

After the fall of the Democratic Republic of Kurdistan in Mahabad, the Barzanis were forced to retreat and try to return to the land of this side of Kurdistan. After killings, bombardment, shelling, hunger, cold, disease, and famine, the Barzanis returned to the land of Southern Kurdistan in two groups. The first group, most of whom were women and children, returned with Sheikh Ahmed Barzani, and the second group was General Mustafa Barzani and his companions, who on April 15, 1947, refused to surrender themselves to the occupier and decided to choose the path of life or death and continue the struggle of Kurdishness.

After defeating several attacks and plots by the Iranian Shah's regime, on April 19, General Mustafa Barzani reorganized his force into five groups as follows: the first group commanded by Sheikh Suleiman Barzani, the second group commanded by Asad Khoshawi, the third group commanded by Mamand Masih, the fourth group commanded by Hamadamin Mirkhan, and the fifth group commanded by Masto Merozi.

General Barzani and his entire force reached the Mizuri region on April 25, 1947, and gathered in the village of Argosh. At that time, the government's response regarding the negotiations that had taken place on the 23rd of the month with the Iraqi government delegation returned. The response was as follows: The Iraqi government agrees, Barzani and his supporters may return to Iraq unconditionally, and the government will not implement the decision it had made in 1945 to execute Mullah Mustafa Barzani, but the government will impose any other punishment it deems appropriate.

The decision to march towards the Soviet Union

On May 6, 1947, General Mustafa Barzani in the village of Argosh, in consultation with the commanders, made his historic decision, which was to take refuge in the Soviet Union. At that very moment, he announced the decision to his entire force, explained the reasons, and gave his Peshmerga the choice to return or stay. The result was that they all unanimously decided to stay and pledged self-sacrifice and continuity.

Barzani, after organizing and dividing his force into columns and determining the mission of each column, ordered his forces to march. On May 22, those forces reached the villages of Herki, Basia, Stuni, and other villages in that region. On May 23, Barzani and his forces were in the village of Dre. On the 24th of the month, those forces went to the village of Bedaw. The revolutionaries left the village of Bedaw on the 25th of the month towards the village of Baye and took the Zinia Asangaran road. On the morning of April 27, General Mustafa Barzani and his forces, after escaping through Zinia Asangaran, crossed the border between Iran and Iraq and settled in the village of Jirmi at night.

The next morning, through the land of Eastern Kurdistan, they left Jirmi towards the villages of Ambi, Derband, and Tlowe, which had been evacuated. Throughout the days of May 29-31, 1947, General Mustafa Barzani and his forces remained in the Herkiati region.

On May 31, they left the Herkiyan region towards the Shakak region and the village of Siro. On June 3, 1947, they set off from the village of Dostan towards the villages of Delze, Haji Jevan, and Gozarash. They spent a short time in the village of Gozarash. When they reached the village of Hevluran, many people had come to welcome them. That same night, Barzani and his force reached the village of Broshkhoran.

General Mustafa Barzani, as an informed and experienced military leader full of hope, gathers the responsible commanders of the forces and informs them: It is necessary to take enough bread and supplies with them because the next stage of the journey is a difficult and dangerous stage, and he says: This very night and before the dawn of June 5, we must cross the Qotur Valley, meaning on both days of June 4-5. This was at a time when Barzani, through guides, had detailed information about the difficulty and hardship of the Qotur Valley and knew that this place had no twists or turns; if a military force were there, they would have to face them and cross the road by force.

General Barzani deemed it best that if the enemy force were stationed there, they must be attacked suddenly; with this military plan, they would not hold their ground and would vacate their positions. Therefore, he ordered his forces to avoid the bases that were located between Broshkhoran and the Qotur Valley. For this reason, they were forced to walk for a few hours and enter the territory of the country of Turkey and return again to the territory of Iran, so that they could pass through that area safely. This military plan was one of the greatest successes of the journey.

On the morning of June 5, Barzani and his force had reached the Arusi tribe area. The next day, from the village of Alandiyan, they reached the two villages of Belasur and Belarash. In the afternoon, they went to the summer pasture of Haji Beg Jamil, and in the evening, they went to the village of Malhami. In this village, in order to avoid confrontation with the occupier's forces and to protect the lives of the revolutionaries, Barzani asks Mirza Abdi, a resident of the village, which is the safest way to the Aras River. Mirza Abdi replies that it is the Mako-Hasun road.

General Mustafa Barzani and his force stayed in the village of Ambariyan on the night of June 7-8, and on the morning of June 8, they reached the villages of Klis Kand and Akhdash near the city of Maku. Because a large force of the Iranian army, supported by artillery, tanks, and air power, had blocked all the roads in the area after their arrival, those two villages had been evacuated. In such a Situation, a military confrontation is expected, General Mustafa Barzani after a careful search of the area, divided his forces into two parts. The command of the main part of the force was Hamadamin Mirxan, with the assistance of Mamand Masih and Masto Merozi, and from Klis Kand, they launched a direct attack on the enemy. The second part of the force, which Asad Khoshawi was leading, and Salih Kanyelnji and Saeed Wali Beg were his assistants, was tasked with attacking from Akhdash. On June 9, 1947, in the Susuz Mountains and the Maku plain, the attack on the Iranian army forces began and continued without stopping until June 11. As a result of the battle, General Barzani and his force were able to open the road and take control of the Maku bridge. Consequently, on June 11, they crossed the Zangi River and reached the village of Hasun. In this battle, Barzani once again proved that in the culture of him and his comrades, there is no such thing as impossible.

Barzani and his force entered the territory of the Jalali tribe on June 13, and there, after much negotiation with the tribal chief, they left that place and reached the village of Suktili near the Aras River on June 15. General Barzani ordered Mirhaj Ahmed Akrayi, Haji Haidar Argoshi, Khalil Ibrahim Argoshi, and Lawko to cross the Aras and inform the Russians that Barzani and his force wanted to enter the territory of the Soviet Union. They carried out the order directly, and on the 16th of the month, they went to the village of Sarajlu, where there was a police station, and they told them, "You go back; we will inform Moscow that you have arrived, and whatever Moscow's answer is, we will tell you."

Barzani's Delegates returned to General Barzani, waited, and no answer was sent to them. Therefore, President Mustafa Barzani tasked Sheikh Suleiman Sheikh Abdul-Salam to cross the Aras and go back to the station. When he arrived there, they informed him that Moscow's answer was "Yes." Despite the size of the Aras River and its width, Barzani and his comrades, one way or another, crossed the river and entered the territory of the Soviet Union.

General Mustafa Barzani and his comrades, after all that hardship, misery, snow, bombing, shelling, and hand-to-hand combat, reached the Soviet Union on June 19, and in one way or another, the enemy's threat to them was reduced, but the hardships of life continued.

Reaching the territory of the Soviet Union

After reaching the Soviet Union, on June 19, 1947, General Mustafa Barzani and his companions were taken to a military camp belonging to the Soviet Union army. That same day, they separated Barzani from his comrades, and Mela Mustafa Barzani was taken to an unknown location, while his comrades were taken to a camp on a river that was three hours away from the city of Nakhchivan, and a large force surrounded them, neither letting anyone out nor letting anyone see those comrades.

Barzani's comrades stayed in the camp for forty days and were given the worst food and clothing, and they had neither a tent nor a house to go into. What they had was the camp courtyard, which had a few trees, and all the comrades would go under the shade of those few trees during the day. During that time, Barzani's comrades had no news of their president and leader, so they demonstrated several times and went on a hunger strike, demanding news of their leader, but their Activities were without results, until one day, Barzani appeared with several officers of the Soviet Union army and informed them that they were moving them from that camp to another place.

Barzani's comrades, by the decision of the Soviet government, were distributed among the regions of Aghdam, Lachin, Ayulakh, and Kalbajar in the Republic of Azerbaijan. On December 10, 1947, they were moved to a military camp that was on the Caspian Sea in Baku, the capital of the Republic of Azerbaijan. On the 23rd of the same month, they were given Military uniforms, and under the supervision of the officers of the Republic of Azerbaijan, they were given eight hours of military training daily. At the same time, for four hours a day, some of their comrades who were literate taught them lessons in learning to write and read the Kurdish language.

After the bad treatment of Jafar Bagirov toward those refugees, General Barzani went to him and said, "We have taken refuge in the Soviet Union to be helped, but here you treat us very badly, so either you find a solution for my comrades, or let me go to Moscow myself," but Bagirov did not implement any of it. Then, on August 29, 1948, it was decided to move the military camp of Barzani's force from the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Charchuk complex near Tashkent, the capital of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and there they continued their military training.

In March 1949, Barzani's force was distributed in groups and squads by train to the collective villages of the Soviet Union, and they worked on the collective farms (kolkhozes) and had to support themselves by picking cotton, harvesting, mud work, or any other work.

The displacement and separation of Barzani's force from each other did not make General Mustafa Barzani lose hope, and even while displaced on the island of Chimbay, he continued to send letters to Stalin, but this time too, the letters did not reach him, until finally, he tasked someone and asked him to put his request letter into the special mail, and with this, his plan succeeded, and the General was returned to Tashkent, and his comrades were all gathered together in 1951 in Vriviski.

After gathering in the city of Vriviski, which was not very far from the city of Tashkent, Barzani visited his comrades every Saturday, and their lives changed, and some of them got married there and had children.

Also, a large part of the revolutionaries of Barzani's force, after learning the Russian language well and after President Mustafa Barzani asked the Soviet authorities to allow his comrades to study in universities and institutes, that approval was received, and Barzani's companions went to the universities of Parti Shkul, Yangi Yul, Tashkent, Vivski, Moscow, etc., and more than 120 were studying in the cities of Gorki, Saratov, Ivanovo, and Tambov. Most of them studied for more than five years, until finally, in 1959, some of them finished institutes and others finished colleges, and some of them later studied for master's and doctoral degrees.

The Return of the National Hero

After the success of the July 14, 1958 revolution in Iraq, General Mustafa Barzani congratulated Abdul Karim Qasim on the success of the revolution, and the new government issued a decision for the return of General Barzani and his companions as heroes. Thus, on August 21, 1958, he left the city of Moscow, and on his way back, he was received by the President of the country of Romania and the President of the Republic of Czechoslovakia. On September 17, he arrived by plane at the airport of the city of Prague, two days later he arrived at the Cairo airport, and at the Qubba Palace, he was received by Gamal Abdel Nasser, the President of that country. On October 6, he landed at the Muthanna airport in the city of Baghdad and was received by all the components of Iraq. The government of the Republic of Iraq, on February 25, 1959, and in accordance with both the third and seventh articles and paragraph (a) of the tenth article, and by acting on article (11) based on the amended Law No. 19 of the year 1959, issued a pardon decision for the Barzani companions who, during the era of the monarchical regime, due to their participation in the Second Barzan Revolution had been issued against them.

Therefore, both those who were in Vriviski and those who were in the Republic of Russia went to the city of Odessa on the Black Sea border, and there, on the date of April 1, 1959, they boarded the ship Grozny and set off towards Iraq. On April 16, they arrived in Basra, where they were received by President Mustafa Barzani, and later they set off towards Kurdistan and were reunited with the sight of the homeland and their loved ones.

The Barzani companions; as a glorious name, it was bestowed upon those persistent and struggling people whom, as long as a single Kurd remains, will respect their struggle, courage, and fighting, because what they and General Mustafa Barzani, their capable leader, did, has rarely happened in the history of the nations of the earth.
