Battle of Khizava, 1981

The Battle of Khizava broke out on May 25, 1981, between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi regime army. The battle occurred when a Peshmerga force belonging to the Zakho Local Committee of the Kurdistan Democratic Party was on a tour to carry out a mission between the villages of the Batifa region within the Badinan region. That force confronted a military force belonging to the Baathist regime army in the village of Khizava. After a fierce and intense battle, another force belonging to the Batifa and Jiyi Plain Brigade of the Iraqi army headed to the battlefield to rescue and support the force that was fighting the Peshmerga.

After the setback September RevolutionThe Peshmerga and the military leaders of the revolution sought refuge in Iran, but this never meant the end of the struggle for freedom and independence for Kurdistan. Preparations began anew to resume the revolution. In August 1979, the Peshmerga forces were redeployed to Badinan to reactivate party organizations. Upon their return, their mission was to search villages to revive the clandestine organization and carry out Peshmerga activities. (1)It is clear that the Peshmerga forces were organized during that period within the party's organizational structure of local branches, committees, and organizations. (2).

In May 1981, a Peshmerga force from the Martyr Shahyaz Saleh and Martyr Mahmoud Yousef organizations, affiliated with the Zakho Local Committee, arrived to conduct a tour of the villages in the Batifa region and carry out a mission for the revolution. They reached the village of Minini on the 25th of the same month. At nightfall, some of the Peshmerga forces went to the village of Khizafa to purchase food and daily necessities. The village was within range of the Ba'athist regime's military forces, so the Peshmerga were carefully divided into three groups to protect themselves in case of an attack. One group went to a place called Jam Jahwar, the second to another place called Faramuk, and the third group dispersed around a shop in the village to buy goods and supplies. (3).

At that moment, they realized they were surrounded by Iraqi army forces. They quickly alerted each other to the situation, and Iraqi soldiers soon opened fire on the Peshmerga, sparking a fierce battle. The soldiers attacked the Peshmerga trapped in the shop, and four or five soldiers were hit by Peshmerga rifle fire, all falling to the ground. As the soldiers fired, fires broke out in civilian homes. The injuries sustained by the soldiers who attacked the shop apparently gave the Peshmerga a chance to regroup and reinforce their defenses. However, at this point, all the forces surrounding the village attacked the Peshmerga. Meanwhile, reinforcements from the Batifa Brigade and the Jiyi Plain arrived at the scene to support their troops.

When the Peshmerga forces saw the situation, with a large number of soldiers in the village and another force coming to their aid, they decided to break the siege and escape. They fled across the rooftops and through the village alleys, reaching their comrades who had previously taken up positions in two locations. Then they all escaped together and returned safely to their positions. (4).
