The Battle of Amedi was a series of operations by the Peshmerga forces of the Amedi Local Committee of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in the Bahdinan region on November 8, 1985, which targeted a number of sites and bases of the mercenary armed men of the Baath government, where the Peshmerga forces were able in a short period to take control of six of the armed men’s sites and inflict heavy losses on them.

Amadiya is a historic city in southern Kurdistan, located 90 km east of Duhok Governorate, situated on a rocky mountain that gives nature a very attractive view.[1]Throughout the history of the liberation revolution, the region witnessed many epics and acts of heroism by the Peshmerga forces during the September and Gulan revolutions. [2]This shows that the people of Amadiya and the surrounding areas, like the rest of Kurdistan, yearn for freedom and reject dictatorial rule.

Throughout the battles and guerrilla warfare activities of the Peshmerga forces of the Amadiya Local Committee of the Kurdistan Democratic Party to defend the rights of the people of Kurdistan, in addition to making Baath officials hear that the revolution is continuing its activities and will not hesitate to achieve those rights.

For this purpose, the Peshmerga forces planned to target a number of positions and bases of the Ba'athist regime's armed groups in the region. On October 8, 1985, they attacked several mercenary positions, capturing three of them and inflicting significant damage, while also taking several prisoners and seizing weapons and equipment. This was confirmed in a letter from the Amadiya local committee to the revolutionary leadership, in which they provided all the information and the capture of the armed groups' positions.[3].

In the same operation, the Peshmerga forces took control of three other positions of the Baath government’s mercenary fighters in the region, including fighters belonging to (Chia Diwali Doski). The bodies of three mercenaries were left on the battlefield and three other fighters were captured. In that series of battles, the Peshmerga forces seized (5) Kalashnikov rifles and two radios, along with a Daktarov machine gun.

One of the Peshmerga, (Muslih Nimat Ghazi), who belonged to the Martyr Shaaban Ghaffar Organization, was martyred in the Peshmerga attack on the bases and positions of the armed forces of the Baath government, and another Peshmerga member was wounded. It is worth mentioning that one of the journalists, (Gin Robert), participated alongside the Peshmerga, where he recorded scenes of the battle with a cinematic video camera.

The Peshmerga forces’ victory in this attack had a significant impact on the harassment of government forces, prompting the revolutionary leadership to intervene and send a congratulatory message to the Peshmerga forces.
