Battle of Wadi Rashava, 1987

The Battle of Wadi Rashava took place on January 11, 1987, when Peshmerga forces attacked a convoy of Iraqi army vehicles, the headquarters of the Derlok regiment, the Ba'ath Party headquarters, and the town's security base on the main roads between Amadiya and Derlok, in order to relieve the pressure exerted by Iraqi forces in their offensive at that time on Atroush and Qalaat Kanika.

The Rashava Valley is located in the Amadiya and Derlok areas of the Badinan region. Due to its geographical location and the local population's sympathy for the Peshmerga forces, it was easier to carry out resistance operations. Therefore, in terms of the revolution and resistance, they played an influential role in supporting the revolution, as they did in other parts of Kurdistan. The Iraqi government frequently launched large-scale campaigns against Kurdistan in specific areas to recapture territories that had fallen to the Peshmerga and to suppress the voice of the revolution in general. The armed forces were completely opposed to the revolutionary forces, as the Peshmerga movement and their activities had increased in most areas. In early January 1987, the Iraqi army and other armed forces launched a 20-day attack on Atroush and the Kanika fortress in Badinan, under the pretext that these areas were under the control of the Peshmerga forces.

The Peshmerga forces of Kurdistan were confronting the government forces with the military strength they possessed in terms of numbers, weapons, and ammunition, inflicting heavy blows upon them. As mentioned, the government launched a major military operation in the Atroush region at the beginning of January 1987, while the Peshmerga forces in other areas, in order to relieve the pressure from the army and government armed forces on the battlefield, prevented military convoys from advancing and carried out various activities.

At approximately 4:00 PM on January 11, 1987, heavy gunfire was heard in the Rashava Valley. The Peshmerga forces had closed the main roads from Amadiya to Derlok and attacked the military convoys that were passing through the road leading to the battlefield. In addition, the Peshmerga forces raided the Derlok Regiment headquarters, the Baath Party headquarters, and the town's security base. It is clear that this Peshmerga campaign against the Iraqi forces caused serious damage, including the burning of the regiment headquarters, the Baath Party headquarters, and the security base, as well as the destruction of an 82mm cannon, two military tanks, one armored vehicle, and one military car.

It is worth noting that the activities of the Peshmerga in most parts of Kurdistan have spread and expanded to such an extent that the government is annoyed and constantly thinks about carrying out military operations to remove the danger that threatens its institutions.
