The battle took place
Following the Peshmerga attack on the town of Pangerd on October 11, 1976, the government monitored Peshmerga movements by helicopter in and around Pangerd. After preparations, government forces began their advance on December 25, 1976, and reached the village of Sider. From there, Peshmerga forces under the Provisional Command launched their attack. Therefore, the Peshmerga force descended and was divided into two axes. Faqi Ismail and Lieutenant Hassan Khoshnaw were assigned to the Sider axis, while Saleh Awzi, Sheikh Hussein Lotar, and Bayez Abdullah headed with a detachment of thirty-five men under the command of Kamal Kirkuki Nasr al-Din Mustafa headed towards the village of Sharstin, and in the same village they encountered government forces.
On the morning of December 26, 1976, the regime army attacked Peshmerga forces in the village of Sharstein from two other directions near Dokan. A fierce battle ensued between the two sides. Due to the disparity in weapons and military equipment, the Peshmerga forces were forced to retreat. Despite this, they managed to inflict heavy losses on the government forces. The regime forces suffered approximately one hundred dead in that battle (some sources indicate 163 soldiers killed and a helicopter shot down). In contrast, the Peshmerga forces suffered between seven and nine martyrs and nine wounded, including the Peshmerga commander. Kamal Kirkuki And the deputy regional official, Nasruddin Mustafa.
In its attack on the village of Sharstein, the government forces spared no effort, shelling civilians and burning and destroying their village. In that attack alone, nine civilians were killed, including women and children ranging in age from four to eighty years old, and 32 others were wounded. Approximately 100 innocent men, women, and children were captured by the regime's army and sent to prisons. After the fighting ended, all the wounded and displaced were transferred to the village of Khorkhura, where they were cared for and sheltered by the villagers.
