The Battle of Talkhim

The Battle of Telkhim took place on June 6, 1963, at the foot of Mount Qarachogh in the village of Telkhim, where the National Guard, the army, and the police attacked the village. The battle lasted from dawn until 1:00 PM. As a result, the Peshmerga forces and the villagers were able to defeat the government forces, thwart the attack, inflict heavy losses in lives and property, and force them to retreat.

After negotiations between the revolution's leaders and the government reached a deadlock, signs of a resumption of war became evident in the behavior and actions of the Ba'athist government headed by Abdul Salam Arif. A local committee headquarters emerged. Kurdistan Democratic Party From within the city of Erbil, they established a base for themselves in Mount Qarachogh in the Makhmur-Kandinawe region, and hundreds of people joined them. The Iraqi government had been preparing to launch an attack on Kurdistan since mid-April 1963, when the military forces, supported by armed mercenaries from the Bedouin Arabs, began in June to attack, raid, arrest, and pursue the Kurds.

The Peshmerga forces stationed on Mount Qarachogh were threatened by the Iraqi army on one side, and by the residents of Makhmur on the other, who constantly informed them that they were under constant threat of arrest and murder by the government's National Guard, and that the Guard had begun looting and confiscating people's property in most villages. Furthermore, arrests, torture, and imprisonment by the National Guard had escalated, to the point where women were subjected to harassment and sexual assault by these forces. To rescue them and to reject and put an end to this injustice and aggression, the Peshmerga formed a commando unit, which ambushed the National Guard stationed in Makhmur between Gwer and Makhmur, killing four of its members and seizing their weapons.

Following that battle, the National Guard, led by Sheikh Anash and Muhammad Shahada, along with a large force of police and soldiers estimated at about 800 people, and supported by tanks, artillery and many military vehicles, launched an attack on Qara Chogh and the village of Telkhim on the morning of June 6, 1963, from several axes: a force from the north via the Erbil-Dibga road towards Makhmur to Bazarga, another force from the south of the border from Kirkuk via the Dibis-Dibga road towards the village of Suleiman Bakhsh, and another force from the west with a tank company heading to the village of Sargaran near Mount Qara Chogh to prevent any force from reaching the mountain and to defend it.

At 7:30 AM on June 6th, in the village of Telkhim, located at the foot of Mount Qara Chogh, Peshmerga forces and villagers confronted government forces on both Telkhim Hill and Kilsp Hill. A fierce battle ensued between the attacking and defending forces, lasting until 1:00 PM. As a result, the government forces suffered a defeat and heavy losses, with 12 soldiers and National Guard members killed and several others wounded. Additionally, a vehicle and a radio were captured. Four Peshmerga fighters were martyred, as were seven villagers who were working in agriculture.

After the Peshmerga and the villagers thwarted the attack, government forces, while withdrawing from the Dibga and Makhmur areas, arrested many innocent civilians on all roads and took them away.
