In the series of battles of the glorious September Revolution between the Peshmerga forces of Kurdistan and the Iraqi army, a major battle took place on June 25, 1965, between the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga forces in the Chwarta area and Mount Azmar, which belong to the Sulaymaniyah Governorate. Chwarta was an important and strategic district center for the Peshmerga forces.
Preparations
On June 25, 1965, the army, with the participation of the (Fifth) and (Twentieth) Brigades, attacked with the aim of seizing the region and pursuing the Peshmerga forces. They attacked Mount Azmar at an opportunity that the Peshmerga forces did not expect. The battle was very violent and bloody, and it lasted for one day, during which the Iraqi army defeated the Peshmerga forces and occupied the entire Mount Azmar and the Chwarta area.
This victory of the Iraqi army came as a result of the Peshmerga forces’ inability to defend the area. Compared to other battles, the Peshmerga forces did not defend much. The Iraqi army’s victory had a great impact on the morale of the people in general and the Peshmerga in particular. In contrast, the Iraqi army was proud of the victory it had achieved during that battle.
