In 1991, the martyr Azim Abdulkarim participated in the popular uprising of the people of Kurdistan and in the liberation of the cities of Halabja, Sayid Sadiq, Arabat, Zarain, Darbandikhan, Sulaymaniyah, Kirkuk, Kalar, and Bawnur.

In 1991, he and a number of his Peshmerga comrades were ambushed by the People's Mujahedin forces near the village of Sheikh Bawe in the Khanaqin district. They were all martyred in this incident. It is noted that he is among the martyrs whose graves are unknown.
