The Battle of Ava Ze 1987

In 1987, the Peshmerga forces of Border Branch 1, operating in the Badinan region, carried out a daring operation against an Iraqi Army military barracks near the town of Sheladze on the Ava Ze River. Launching a swift and strategic attack, the Peshmerga successfully captured the barracks, eliminating all the soldiers stationed there. Remarkably, they completed the mission without incurring any casualties, showcasing their tactical prowess and resilience.

In 1987, the Peshmerga forces intensified their campaigns across most parts of South Kurdistan, conducting extensive operations against Iraqi military bases, headquarters, and fortified positions. The scope of these activities was so widespread that Iraqi government forces, including the army and its auxiliary militias, were perpetually on high alert. Despite repeated attacks by Iraqi forces on Peshmerga-controlled areas, these military campaigns failed to significantly disrupt the Peshmerga's operations. On the contrary, their activities continued to expand, demonstrating their resilience and determination.

That same year, a pivotal meeting of Peshmerga officials was convened at the headquarters of the First Branch of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in Kumata, located in the Badinan region. During this gathering, a specialized force was organized under the supervision of Colonel Mohammed and Deputy Commander Zeway, along with other prominent Peshmerga leaders. The primary objective of this newly formed unit was to deliver strategic blows to Iraqi military forces by targeting their bases and headquarters.

Following the meeting, the Peshmerga returned to their respective positions and meticulously planned their next operation. After thorough deliberations, they identified an Iraqi military base near the town of Sheladze on the Ava Ze River. This base, established to exert control over the region and hinder Peshmerga movements, became the focus of their next mission.

A detailed plan was devised, and a precise timeline was set. On the appointed night, the Peshmerga launched a coordinated assault on the military checkpoint. The operation was executed with remarkable efficiency, and the base was swiftly captured. All the soldiers stationed at the checkpoint were neutralized, and a significant cache of weapons, including Kalashnikov rifles, was seized.

After successfully completing their mission, the Peshmerga forces returned to the branch headquarters in Kumata without suffering any casualties. This operation, like many others, sent a resounding message to the Ba'ath regime: the Kurdish revolution remained steadfast in its pursuit of democratic rights, a cause for which the Kurdish people had long fought and sacrificed.

Such actions underscored the Peshmerga's commitment and served as a testament to their strategic capabilities and unwavering dedication to the Kurdish struggle for freedom and justice.
