Jaafar Sulaiman Ali Chey

Jafar Sulaiman Ali Chey, born in 1945 in Chey village in the Amedi district of Duhok province, experienced significant upheaval due to political unrest throughout his life. In 1975, following the Aylul Revolution, he fled to Iran, where he initially settled in Naghdeh. Later, he was transferred to Mashhad, where he lived until 1979. That same year, he returned to Karaj and met Idris Barzani. He remained in Iran until 1981 before returning to South Kurdistan and eventually settling in Duhok.

In 1961, after the outbreak of the Aylul Revolution, Jafar Sulaiman Ali Chey joined Salim Chey as a Peshmerga, dedicating himself to the Kurdish cause. In 1962, he took part in the battle against the Jashes of Marba under the command of Mohammed Amin Mirkhan, displaying his commitment and bravery early in his military career.

By 1963, Jafar was transferred to Barzani's headquarters in Balakayety, where he played a crucial role in operations across the villages of Ranya, Qaladze, Dire, and Dilman. That same year, he fought in the significant battles of Ali Beg and Sar Spilk, further establishing his reputation as a determined and skilled Peshmerga.

In 1969, Jafar participated in the pivotal Battle of Makhubznan, fought between Ranya and Sangasar under the command of Omar Agha Dolamari. His leadership qualities were recognized in 1970 when he was appointed head of the first branch, a role in which he made substantial contributions to the Kurdish resistance.

Jafar's expertise extended to critical defensive operations. He was instrumental in manning the anti-aircraft cannon at strategic locations such as Hafiz Bridge, Qasre Gorge, and Mami Khalan in the Choman district of Erbil province. He also played a vital role in defending the Voice of Kurdistan headquarters and the Shorsh Printing House, both symbols of Kurdish resistance and identity. In 1975, he fought in the Battle of Dilman under the command of Arif Yasin, further solidifying his status as a key figure in the Peshmerga forces.

After decades of service, Jafar retired from the Aylul Foundation in 2004. His lifelong dedication to the Kurdish struggle was formally recognized in 2010 when he was awarded the prestigious Barzani Medal by President Masoud Barzani at the 13th Congress of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in Erbil. His legacy is one of unwavering commitment, courage, and leadership in the face of adversity.
