8th Congress of Azadi Kurdistan Students Union Erbil - 1993

The 8th Congress of the Kurdistan Students Union (Azadi) was held in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, in 1993, after the 1991 spring uprising, in order to reorganize and separate from the Kurdistan Democratic Youth Union.


Reasons and preparations for holding the congress:

The unrelenting armed and cultural struggle of the different classes of South Kurdistan since 1931, despite the ups and downs, finally led to the spring uprising of 1991 and the independence of the Kurdistan Region. From the beginning of its establishment in 1953 until the spring of 1991, the Kurdistan Students Union, despite all the obstacles and difficulties, did not hesitate to fight for the Kurdish people to reach this safe shore.

The period between the seventh and eighth congresses of the Kurdistan Students Union lasted more than 21 years. During this period, many changes occurred in the organization and structure of the organization. Several conferences were held at different times to reorganize the organization in order to best adapt it to local and regional developments, the latest and most important of which was the 1991 spring uprising. After the uprising and the stabilization of the situation in the Kurdistan Region, in 1993, the Kurdistan Democratic Party held its eleventh congress and elections to the Kurdistan National Assembly were held, so the Kurdistan Students Union decided to hold its own congress. Especially after the KDP unification congress, which required all mass organizations and united parties to be reorganized.

In the sixth meeting of the Kurdistan Students Union (KDU) and Youth Union on March 10, 1993, it was decided to hold a "Freedom Congress" at the headquarters of the KSU Secretariat in the Sheraton Building in Erbil, and decided to add 13 members from all branches to the staff of the executive committee, which consisted of the following:

1- Luqman Ismail and Bashar Hamid - Duhok - Nineveh Branch.

 

2- Rebar Ahmad Khalid and Khanzad Ahmad Abd - Erbil Branch.

 

3- Aram Mohammed Abdullah, Arkan Tahseen Sadiq and Jalal Mohammed - Sulaimani Branch.

 

4- Omar Sharif and Salam Hussein Abdullah - Kirkuk Branch.

 

5- Sasan Awni and Mustafa Salim HamadAmin - Salahaddin University Committee.

 

6- Gohdar Ismail - Headquarters of the Secretariat Bureau.

 

 


The secretariat office after the uprising was as follows:

1- Abdullah Khalo Ali - Secretary.

 

2- Rafaat Saeed Mohammed Amin - Member of the Secretariat Bureau.

 

3- Faryad Shafi Mohammed, also known as Faryad Barzani, member of the Secretariat Bureau.

 

4- Adel Ali, also known as Adel Botani, member of the Secretariat Bureau.

 

5- Kurdistan Pirdawd Qadir - Member of the Secretariat Bureau.

 

6- Ibrahim Mustafa Mohammed - Member of the Secretariat Bureau.

 

7- Haji Abdulrahman Darwish - Member of the Secretariat Bureau.

 

8- Dzhwar Faiq - Member of the Secretariat Bureau.

 


The heads of the branches were as follows:

 

1- Rebar Ahmad Khalid - Head of Erbil Branch.

 

2- Haji Abdulrahman - Head of Sulaimani Branch.

 

3- Azad Faiq Ghafoor, known as Dzhwar Faiq, head of Kirkuk branch.

 

4- Ibrahim Ismail - Head of refugee (Aware) Branch.

 

5- Ibrahim Mustafa Mohammed - Head of Duhok - Nineveh Branch3.

After these changes and on the basis of the above decisions, on October 16-20, 1993, ((Freedom (Azadi) Congress)) was held in the Yellow (Zard) Hall in Erbil, with the presence of 793 delegates and under the slogan (Science - Peace – Reconstruction) in the presence of the President Massoud Barzani in which president Masoud Barzani, representative of the Political Bureau, Minister of Education and President of Salahaddin University delivered speeches4.

The delegates of the congress were divided into students and youth. To elect two organizations, Regarding the Kurdistan Students Union, the following members were elected to the executive committee:

 1- Sasan Osman Awni - Secretary.

 

2- Hangaw Abdullah Khan - Head of Communications Department.

 

3- Nazim Rashid - Department of Communications.

 

4- Guhdar Ismail - Head of Media Department.

 

5- Rebar Ahmad Khalid - Head of Erbil Branch.

 

6- Amin Osman- Head of Sulaimani Branch.

 

7- Ali Awni Ni'maat - Media Department.

 

8- Tavga Omar Rashid- Media Department.

 

9- Mustafa Salim - Head of Organization Department.

 

10- Shakir Abubakr Aziz - Organization Department.

 

11- Fares Omar - Head of Duhok-Ninawa Branch.

 

12- Shno Amin Mansour - Head of Karkook Branch.

 

13- Fariq Sulaiman Harni - Head of Finance Department.

 

14- Dilshad Shahab - Head of Salahaddin University Committee.

 

15- Tariq Jaafar Faily - Organization Department5.

 


Reserve Executive Committee:

All the branches of the Students Union were Erbil Branch, Kirkuk Branch, Sulaimani Branch, Duhok-Ninawa Branch. On August 18, 1993, the decision was made to open the Salahaddin University branch. On February 1, 1996, the Akre branch was opened. On February 1, 1996, the Soran branch was opened7.

Conducting the Congress:

On October 23, 1993, the members of the Secretariat were elected in Erbil in the presence of all members of the Executive Committee, and among the members of the Secretariat Bureau, the Secretary was elected: :

1- Sasan Osman Auni - Secretary.

 

2- Hangaw Abdullah Khan - Member of the Secretariat Bureau and Head of Relations Department.

 

3- Gohdar Ismail - Member of the Secretariat Bureau and Head of the Media Department.

 

4- Mustafa Salim - Member of the Secretariat Bureau and Head of the Organization Department.

 

5- Brigadier Sulaiman, also known as Brigadier Harni, member of the Secretariat Bureau and head of the Finance Department.

 

 

 

After the Azadi Congress, the first heads of the branches were as follows:

 

1- Fares Omar, known as Fares Barwari, Head of Duhok-Nineveh Branch.

 

2- Rebar Ahmad Khalid - Head of Erbil Branch.

 

3- Shno Amin Mansour, head of Kirkuk branch, is considered to be the first woman head of the branch in the history of the Kurdistan Students Union.

 

4- Amin Osman- Head of Sulaimani Branch.

 

5- Shaban Shaban Ahmad - Head of Akre Branch.

 

6- Faisal Sadiq Tofiq - Head of Soran Branch
