The Battle of Basra, July 1987

The battle was a great epic for the Peshmerga forces within the activities of the third and fourth branches of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, when they attacked a regiment of Iraqi army forces near the village of Basra at the foot of Mount Kosrat on the night of July 27/28, 1987. The Peshmerga forces were able to inflict serious damage on the Iraqi government forces, resulting in the killing, wounding and capture of a large number of soldiers.

Basra is a Kurdish village in the Khadran sub-district of the Dokan district, located at the foot of Mount Kosrat. Like other areas of Kurdistan, this region was under the control of Iraqi forces. The presence of an Iraqi army regiment, complete with its outposts and military bases, had a significant negative impact and posed numerous risks to the livelihoods of the villagers and the surrounding area. It also presented a major obstacle to the Peshmerga's activities and the movement of its forces. In 1987, the Peshmerga experienced a significant expansion of their operations due to the disarray and fragmentation within the ranks of the Iraqi army and government forces. Groups of Peshmerga fighters engaged Iraqi forces daily in various locations throughout Kurdistan, inflicting heavy losses in lives and equipment. .

Among the Peshmerga's activities was the Battle of Basra, which took place on the night of July 27-28, 1987. A Peshmerga force belonging to the Third and Fourth Branches of the Kurdistan Democratic Party launched a major attack on the Basra Regiment, inflicting heavy losses on the government forces. Because the Peshmerga forces had carried out their mission according to a well-thought-out plan and with full preparation, they were able to quickly capture and defeat the regiment. Ultimately, the government forces suffered heavy losses, including 152 soldiers killed and 70 captured. The regiment's headquarters and all its outposts and military checkpoints were destroyed, and a large quantity of weapons, ammunition, vehicles, and military equipment fell into the hands of the Peshmerga forces. .
