He participated in the Battle of Zelim Bridge, the Battle of Penjwen, the Battle of Wala Samt and Qalbaza, the Battle of Kani Boza Taza Di, the Battle of Dawla Sur, the Battle of Nalpariz, the Battle of Kuluz Bridge (Keh Sana Garta), the Battle of Sayed Sadiq, the Battle of Darbandikhan, the Battle of Ahmed Awa, the Battle of Kani Saif, the Battle of Khurmal, and the Battle of Mount Shenrou. He was wounded in the Battle of Wala Samt and Qalbaza in 1963 and in the Battle of Dawla Sur in 1967.

He assumed the position of platoon commander in 1964, and in 1968 he became responsible for the military wing in Sharif Haji Mulla’s company. In 1970 he assumed the position of platoon commander of the Seventh Border Guard Regiment, and in 1974 he assumed the position of commander of the Second Company of the (Bemmo) Regiment within the Khabat Forces of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, when Hama Sur Hussein was the commander of the aforementioned regiment.

On June 4, 1974, Sheikh Jamal Chotan, along with a group of his Peshmerga comrades, ambushed a military convoy belonging to the Iraqi regime on the road between Sulaymaniyah and Arbat, which intended to attack Darbandikhan district. After violent clashes between the two sides, Sheikh Jamal Chotan and a number of his Peshmerga comrades, including Kamal Hawari, Ali Mazli, and Fatah Sur, were martyred.
