The Zakho Regional Committee of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) launched an offensive against the Iraqi government's military forces on the Zakho-Batuf road on February 26, 1988. Following a fierce confrontation, the Peshmerga forces emerged victorious, inflicting significant damage on the Iraqi forces. They managed to neutralize a considerable number of enemy fighters and soldiers; they were able to capture a few hostages as well.

On the 26th of February, 1988, the Peshmerga forces found themselves under attack in the Balisan Valley by the Iraqi army. This assault was launched from the Betwata and Khalifan fronts, marking a significant and large-scale offensive. The Peshmerga forces effectively engaged the Iraqi forces using a well-coordinated military strategy, bolstered by tanks, artillery, guns, and warplanes. Consequently, the government forces suffered a resounding defeat by nightfall.
