Basara is a Kurdish village in the Khidran sub-district of the Dukan district, located at the foot of Mount Kosrat. It seems that the Iraqi forces were present in this area like other areas of Kurdistan. The presence of an Iraqi Army battalion in the area with all its fortifications and military bases had a significant negative impact and posed risks to the work, daily life, and source of livelihood for the village residents and the people of the region. It was also a major obstacle to the revolution and the movements of the Peshmerga Forces. In the Year 1987, a wide opening occurred before the Peshmerga activities due to the disturbances and fragmentation of the ranks of the army and government forces. Groups of Peshmerga were confronting the Iraqi forces daily in various places and locations in Kurdistan, dealing them severe blows and inflicting heavy losses in lives and equipment. .
Among the activities of the Peshmerga is the Basara battle, which took place on the night of July 27/28, 1987, when a force of Peshmerga belonging to the Third and Fourth Branches of the Kurdistan Democratic Party launched a major attack on the Basara battalion and inflicted great damage on the government forces. Since the Peshmerga Forces had carried out their mission according to a studied plan and full preparation, they were able in a short time to seize the battalion and defeat it. In the end, the government forces suffered heavy losses, including the killing of 152 soldiers and the capture of 70 others. The battalion headquarters and all fortifications and military checkpoints were destroyed, and a large quantity of weapons, ammunition, vehicles, and military equipment fell into the hands of the Peshmerga Forces. .
