The Kurdistan Democratic Party’s Shawana Meeting

The Shawana meeting of the Kurdistan Democratic Party – (Shawana Meeting – beginning of July), after the death of president Mustafa Barzani with the purpose of reorganizing the party affairs and making preparations for the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s ninth congress was held in the village of Shawana in the east of Kurdistan.

Reasons and conduct of the meeting

On February 11, 1979, after the Uprising of the Iranian people, the monarchy collapsed in that country and replaced with the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the leadership of the Kurdistan Democratic Party was able to establish good relations with the new Iranian authority, as a large number of refugees from south of Kurdistan have been in the country since 1974. In the beginning of 1979, another most impactful and tragic events was the death of President Mustafa Barzani. On March 1, 1979, after four years in exile, President Barzani passed away in the United States of America, and on April 4th of the same year, his body was returned to Iran and buried in the town of Shno in east of Kurdistan.

The situation of regional changes in general and the death of President Mustafa Barzani had brought upon the organizations of the Kurdistan Democratic Party required a broad and urgent meeting. For this purpose Kurdistan Democratic Party’s interim leadership in early July 1979, organized a large gathering in the village of Shawana in the north of the town of Shno in the east of Kurdistan. During the meeting, several important decisions were made, the most important of which was the election of Masoud Barzani as the interim president of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, until the ninth congress and the election of Sami Abdulrahman as the general secretary of the Party, as well as trying to normalize relations with the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran and to maintain relations with The Islamic Republic of Iran against the Iraqi regime, provided that the Party is not willing to interfere in the internal affairs of Iranian Kurdistan. At the meeting, President Masoud Barzani called for he convening of the ninth congress to be held as soon as possible until the summer or autumn of 1979, but Sami Abdulrahman and another group believed that the congress should be postponed until the spring of 1980, until the party's new program fully implemented among the refugees and party’s organization in Iran. Finally, It was decided to hold the congress on the specified date, which President Masoud Barzani proposed.

As a result of the meeting, a preparatory committee was selected to hold the Party’s ninth congress which consisted of:

  1. Ali Abdullah

  2. Idris Barzani

  3. Muhammad Mala Qadir

  4. Rashid Sindi

  5. Arif Taifur

  6. Karim Shingali

  7. Wuria Saati.
