Seventh Congress of Kurdistan Students Union Sulaimani - 1972

The seventh congress of the Kurdistan Students Union was held on March 30, 1972, in a free atmosphere in Sulaimani, thanks to the March 11 agreement between the revolutionary leadership and the Iraqi central government.


Conducting the Congress:

After the sixth congress, one of the decisions of the congress was to hold the congress of the Kurdistan Students Union every year. In light of this decision, a year later, work was done to hold a new congress. From March 30 to April 2, 1972, the 7th Congress of the Kurdistan Students Union was held in the conference hall of Sulaimani University with the participation of 450 representatives of seven branches1.

The congress was attended by Taya Abdulkarim, a member of the leadership of the Ba'athist Arab Socialist Party and the oil minister. The representative of the Iraqi president delivered2 the president of republic’s speech. In addition, Ali Abdullah, Governor of Sulaimani, Sami Abdulrahman, Minister of Northern Affairs and representative of President Mustafa Barzani, Bianco, representative of the Union of Students Organizations of Romania, engineer Tariq Akreyi, President of Kurdish Students Association in Europe, participated as a guest in this conference3.

The first day of the congress was devoted to the reading of speeches and the opening ceremony. For the second day, the preparatory committee was appointed and the congress officially began its work in the following days. The most important decisions of the congress were: Establish the General Executive Council to replace the Executive Committee and open branches of the council throughout Iraq. Increase the illiteracy eradication center. Transfer of the Kurdish Department of the College of Arts of Baghdad University to its own college. Helping students from other parts of Kurdistan. Strengthening relations with mass student organizations around the world and reaffirming the support of the Students Union for the revolution and President Mustafa Barzani4.

 

 At this congress, the rank of vice president was removed and the secretariat was elected by the delegates as follows:

4- Chia Abbas - Member of the Secretariat Bureau

 

5- Yousef Mawloud Qasab - Member of the Secretariat Bureau

 

6- Azad Mohammed Najib - Member of the Secretariat Bureau

 

7- Mohammed Qarani Karadaghi - Member of the Secretariat Bureau

 

8- Osman Salih Khoshnaw - Member of the Secretariat Bureau

 

9- Jalal Salim Khoshnaw - Member of the Secretariat Bureau

 

10- Hussein Taha Shingali - Member of the Secretariat Bureau

 

11- Najmaddin Omar Karim - Member of the Secretariat Bureau

 

The reserve members of the Secretariat were elected as follows:

 

1- Khasraw Gul Mohammed

 

2- Aziz Mahmoud

 

3- Sirwan Abdullah

 

4- Najmaddin Aziz

 

5- Jabar Saber5.

 

According to the internal program, the organizational structure of the Kurdistan Students Union was:

 

Branch, School Committee or University and Institute Committee, Regional Committee, Branch Committee, Executive Committee, Secretariat Office and Secretary General6.
