On the morning of April 24, 1974, the Iraqi Army launched an attack on the areas under the control of the Kurdistan Revolution, and entered the battle with all its strength and military capability, advancing with the aim of controlling the entire territory of Kurdistan. Some of its forces tried via Kirkuk-Sulaymaniyah on April 25, 1974, before reaching Chamchamal, to head towards Sangaw. The units of that force consisted of the Second Battalion of the Fourth Force of the Second Division of Kirkuk, with the support of the tank battalion that was advancing the forces. It seems that the Iraqi Army was not aware that the Peshmerga forces belonging to the First Battalion of the Second Kirkuk Force were confronting it with all their strength.

In the Shiosor region, the Peshmerga forces fortified themselves in their defensive position and formed a large concrete barrier in front of the advance of the Iraqi forces. Furthermore, they also placed anti-tank and anti-personnel mines in the path of the attacking army. When the battle began, a number of Iraqi Army tanks were destroyed due to the explosion of the mines. In the meantime, the Commander of the 2nd Infantry Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Staff Diaa al-Din Jamal, issued an order that tanks should not walk at the front of the attack except in necessary cases.

After the infantry continued their attack, they were suddenly subjected to Peshmerga fire and mines. After eight hours of continuous fighting, the Iraqi Army suffered a major defeat and heavy damage in lives and equipment against the defense and steadfastness of the Peshmerga forces. Among the dead was the personal guard of the battalion commander, and the material damage included the destruction of six tanks, three armored vehicles, and several military vehicles, in addition to the seizure of several pieces of light and medium weapons.
