Peshmerga activities in the year 1984 had spread to such an extent that in two months they had exceeded one hundred and thirty activities against Ba'ath bases and facilities. The Peshmerga were able to inflict heavy losses on the Ba'ath in terms of killed, wounded, and the destruction of military vehicles (Barzani, 2021, 94).
In the summer of 1984, a Peshmerga force belonging to the Renjbaran organization was on patrol in the areas around Duhok near the village of Bane Sur. During that outing, they decided to strike a major blow to the military, armed, and security forces of the Ba'ath regime. During the patrol, they identified the location of their activity, which was setting an ambush on the main Mangishke road for a convoy of government vehicles.
After identifying the location of the activity, they informed the Duhok district committee that they had devised a surprise attack plan against the Ba'ath regime forces. The revolutionary force consisted of 15 Peshmerga. At 3 o'clock at night, they reached the designated location on the main Mangishke road. The Peshmerga force hid themselves in the trees and forest of the area by the road and waited for the arrival of the military vehicle. They stationed one of their Peshmerga as a road guard in a high place so that he could easily see any military or armed vehicle passing by and inform his fellow Peshmerga (Murad, 2007, 147).
The Peshmerga force remained in that location until the next day at 10:30 in the afternoon, waiting for the arrival of the government forces' vehicle, so that they could strike their blow and record a heroic feat. Suddenly, they were warned by the road guard that a military vehicle of the IFA type was coming from the direction of Mangishke towards the ambush. The Peshmerga prepared themselves, and as soon as the vehicle reached them and fell into their ambush, they opened fire on it simultaneously. Within 10 minutes, they destroyed the vehicle, which contained a large number of Jash, and all of them were killed. During the battle, the Peshmerga support force that was stationed in a location to protect the Peshmerga force at the ambush site played a major role in confronting the surrounding outposts with DShK, machine guns, BKC, and mortars (82 mm) until the activity was completed successfully and the Peshmerga escaped safely (Murad, 2007, 148).
After the battle ended, the Peshmerga withdrew and left the location. A large government military force from Mangishke and another force wanted to come to the scene of the incident to confront the Peshmerga force, but the Peshmerga force confronted them from all sides and fired at them. They did not let them advance, and after they suffered losses, they returned backwards, but they shelled the villages and towns of the area. Despite the fact that the shelling was intense, it was without damage (Murad, 2007, 148).
The Peshmerga's gains in this activity consisted of seizing eight Kalashnikov-type weapons, one Brno rifle, and one (RPG), along with a large amount of ammunition and military equipment. It is worth noting that the Peshmerga force in this activity was without losses, only one Peshmerga was wounded (Murad, 2007, 148).
