At the end of 1968, the government of Iraq, with the cooperation and coordination of the armed men of the old Politburo wing, launched a severe and major campaign against the areas under the control of the Aylul Revolution. They were able to occupy a wide geographical area in the Garmian and Qaradagh regions, but the leadership of the revolution carried out a comprehensive attack to liberate those areas. In November 1969, it was able to retake Qaradagh and several other areas and expel their forces from those places.
